Introducing The Screwtape Letters , C.S. Lewis mourned his inability to write analogous notes from an imaginary guardian angel. Miller has not really rushed in where Lewis feared to tread, for these fictional letters detailing "Valiant's" experiences with a young junior executive in Cleveland are more a frank account of the fledgling angel's own stumbling growth than efforts to capture the reflections of a fully mature spirit. Indeed, the tone sounds comically prudish at times as Valiant agonizes over his "client's" tawdry lusts before finally witnessing his conversion at a "Frankie Williams Conquest." Gentle satire; uneven but entertaining. EC
