Dust jacket notes: "It has been a number of years since anyone has written a new definitive biography of John Wesley, and now Dr. Tuttle has once more introduced us to Wesley's life and theology. He has several primary objectives in this book: ĚTo give us an interesting and readable biography which struggles with a man of history and emotion, while at the same time demonstrate an appreciation for the detail available to us through his Diaries, Journals, and Letters. ĚTo present a comprehensive theological analysis which takes into account a practical theologian whose theological thrust seems to shift as needs shift. ĚTo spark the kind of interest that would cause you to go out and read Wesley yourself. ĚTo inspire. John Wesley: His Life and Theology has four parts and each part has three phases, the first two of which are written in the first person. In the first phase, called 'Setting the Stage,' Dr. Tuttle provides an opportunity to look at John Wesley 'up close and personal.' He goes into detail about what Wesley did and said and where he went. The second phase consists of four chapters of biographical material. These sixteen chapters together describe Wesley's 'biographical notes' and provide the general overview. The third phase of each part is a chapter entitled 'The Analysis.' These four analysis chapters enable Dr. Tuttle to develop his own interpretation and make his own observations, and they reduce the temptation to put words into Mr. Wesley's mouth. This book is an attempt to portray a very real man in such a way that the reader may know that he faced problems in a very real world, in many ways much like his own."
