Ernest Herndon is a reporter for the McComb, Mississippi, "Enterprise-Journal" newspaper who enjoys backpacking, camping, and canoeing adventures and has traveled to all of the places he writes about in the Eric Sterling series. He lives in rural Gloster, Mississippi, with his wife, Angelyn, and several dogs and cats.

Gr. 3-5. Eric Sterling is a typical 12-year-old, an average student, sometimes clumsy, occasionally a troublemaker. Why then, he wonders, has he been chosen by the CIA's new spin-off organization, WSI (Wildlife Special Investigations), as an agent for a top-secret mission? Puzzled, Eric enlists the aid of his computer-genius buddy, who discovers that Eric Sterling has been confused with Erik Stirling, a 13-year-old karate black belt, a straight-A student, and a linguist. But no matter how hard Eric tries to explain the mix-up, WSI's agent in charge refuses to listen. Consequently, Eric soon finds himself on a remote South Pacific island where scientists are purportedly growing 30-foot lizards. The adventure is farfetched, yet fairly predictable. It's also occasionally humorous, and Herndon doesn't use violence to create suspense. Although the story may not be as ominously chilling as Stine's Goosebumps thrillers, it will still appeal to that series' fans. Ellen Mandel
