Octogenarian Lawrence Crabb Sr. here looks back on his life as a husband, father, and man of God. Growing up as a poor boy whose father died young, he describes times of anger toward the God who took his father away. Also in each chapter, Larry Jr. reflects on what his father has written and describes the struggles with God, he, too, experiences. His father's wisdom taught him how to maintain solid faith amid doubts and difficult circumstances. Neither man writes as if he has arrived at a place of spiritual perfection. Without false emotionalism, both writers are transparent and honest, and each admits to his continuing struggles with doubts and disappointments.
