Movie talk: Who said what about whom in the movies

Director Blake Edwards is "A man of many talents, all of them minor," according to critic Leslie Halliwell--a typical observation from this lightweight collection of over 4000 gossipy quotations from the movie world. Paul Hogan thinks Richard Pryor is funny, Bruce Dern thinks Peter Fonda is a bad actor, the leading man is impossible to work with but the villain is really a swell guy, and so on. Most of the quotations are undated, emphasizing the entertainment-oriented, nondocumentary slant of the book, though this arouses puzzlement with quotes like the comment that Shirley Maclaine's "oars aren't touching the water these days." Browsers will need to be movie buffs to know who many of these show business people are (and coverage extends back to the silent days), since their nationalities and whether actor, director, etc., is not specified in the main text. Lacking the memorable timelessness of quotations from classics like Bartlett's, the present work is flippant and amusing. Recommended for public libraries.
