From Library Journal

While studies on Hemingway abound, very few concentrate solely on the old monster's nonfiction. Novels and short stories were his bread and butter, but Hemingway also prided himself on his journalistic abilities, producing four full-length books of nonfiction. Beginning with the influence of his early days as a cub reporter on the Kansas City Star , Weber fully analyzes the four ( Death in the Afternoon , Green Hills of Africa , The Dangerous Summer , and A Moveable Feast ), considering whether Ernesto accomplished his goal of writing the "absolute truth" about his subjects. The general consensus is that he did not relate events exactly as they happened but embellished them with the proper measure of emotion to ensure that they'd be "valid in a year or in ten years." Therefore, the term "nonfiction" as applied to these works should be taken loosely. Weber's own text is a bit repetitive in spots, but that is a minor critique. The information is well presented and documented, making this volume a long-overdue addition to Hemingway scholarship.
