Investigator Brian Kayne's mother tries to set him up with a successful young artist who just might hold the key to solving some recent deaths and disappearances in Kayne's district

Thanks to his matchmaking mom, Brian Kayne--an investigator in the Paloma County, California, D.A.'s office--finds himself attending Joanna Starrett's gallery show, where some of the poems she's illustrated remind him of an unsolved missing mother-daughter case. Could Joanna's collaborator, ``Sam Fox,'' have known the women, maybe even murdered them? Though Joanna's never actually met Sam, she's carried on a long, romantic correspondence with him and doubts that her sensitive pen pal is capable of murder. Ben disagrees, however, and sets out to prove a connection. Before long, he's shot at, almost crushed by a boulder, and then starts finding remnants of human bone in brush-fire ashes. Meanwhile, Joanna stakes out Sam's p.o. box, where she is soon spotted and put next on the killer's death list.... If you can overlook the hapless plot of this based-on-several- coincidences first novel, the characters and offbeat tone are rather endearing--particularly with regard to Brian, his cat Mabel, and his office cohort ``Mother'' Theresa. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. First novelist Williams relies on tenuous coincidences and leaps of faith to move along her unbelievable plot. Overweight, guilt-ridden Brian Kayne, an investigator for the Paloma County, Calif., district attorney's office, visits his mother in Southern California and meets her current candidate for Mrs. Brian, artist Jo Starrett. Reading a group of poems Jo illustrated, Brian leaps to the conclusion that the author, Sam Fox, is really Lloyd Fulton, whom authorities think may be responsible for the recent disappearances of his wife and daughter in Paloma County. Brian's questions raise doubts in Jo, who has collaborated with Sam for 10 years without ever having met him. Brian's cat, Jo's senior-citizen painting class and a group of backpacking nuns all feature prominently in this mishmash of a story.
