Country singer Reba McEntire's first big break came when she was asked to sing the national anthem at the 1974 National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City. Cusic ( Randy Travis , St. Martin's, 1990) recounts how her career subsequently took off like a barrel race. The ten-year span of 1975-85 culminated in a Country Music Association's Top Female Vocalist of the Year award. Since then she has clicked off accomplishments right and left: three additional Top Female Vocalist awards, a Grammy, and an appearance at Carnegie Hall for which she received a five-minute ovation. Cusic includes background tidbits from McEntire's childhood, her rodeo performances during high school and college, and her experience with the country music publishing business. Recommended for country music collections.
