9780312082550: Live to Regret

Synopsis

Owen Keane returns, once again on the trail of human mysteries, hoping to find clues to the spiritual questions that haunt him. In this compelling new novel, Owen is struggling to recover from the sudden death of Mary Ohlman, the wife of his friend Harry - and, years ago, Owen's great love. But Owen must overcome his own grief to investigate Harry's strange behavior and extended retreat in a small New Jersey seashore town. Unsure whether Harry is tormented by sorrow, alcohol, or guilt, Owen gets caught up not only in his friend's troubles, but also in those of a doubtful priest and an enigmatic young woman, as well as the dark secret of the town itself. Untangling the mysteries of death and memories, Owen begins to understand his own life and future.

About the Author

Terence Faherty is the author of two mystery series: the Shamus-winning Scott Elliott private eye series, set in the golden age of Hollywood, and the Edgar-nominated Owen Keane series, which follows the adventures of a failed seminarian turned metaphysical detective. His short fiction has won the Macavity Award and been nominated for the Anthony and the Derringer. An occasional lecturer on the films of Basil Rathbone, Faherty was recently admitted to the Baker Street Irregulars. He lives in Indianapolis, Indiana, with his wife Jan.

From Kirkus Reviews

An introspective second appearance for former seminarian- turned-investigator Owen Keane (Deadstick), who's now hired by his old college friend's father to watch over the grieving Harry--in the midst of a ``spiritual crisis''--and, if possible, to return him to the family legal fold. After his wife Mary died in a car accident six months ago, Harry retired to Spring Lake, New Jersey, to jog and paint and, more psychologically damaging, to pretend Mary was still alive. Owen, too, is grieving for Mary, his college sweetheart, and must come to terms with his loss. Also struggling with the concept of death (and grief, guilt, and deceit) is the mysterious Diana, who tempts the priest over at St. Brigid's, seduces Owen, and appears in most of Harry's more tormented paintings. But as the three men own up to their own shortcomings, emotional blinders and doubts, they are less gulled by Diana, who seems determined to reenact the tragedy of the Victorian-era suicide that still haunts the lakeside community and casts a pall over St. Brigid's. Moving study of men wrestling with the lies they tell themselves about women, and with the lies women tell them. Minimal detective work here, but a heady read nonetheless. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
