Synopsis
Smell the hot dogs, hear the crack of the bat - it's spring training in Florida, and sports journalist Kate Henry is back covering the Toronto Titans in Night Game, Alison Gordon's third baseball mystery. Kate is feeling like anything but a spring chicken, however - especially compared to "Juicy Lucy" Cartwright, a curvaceous young reporter who's just as interested in getting to home plate, so to speak, as they are.
But then Lucy is discovered shot to death on the beach outside the players condos. The prime suspect is Domingo Avila, a promising rookie from the Dominican Republic. But Domingo, who is black and foreign in a town not known for its tolerance of strangers, feels like too easy a mark to Kate - and, in setting out to clear his name, Kate embarks on an investigation steeped in foul play.

When Toronto Planet baseball writer Kate Henry visits the Titans? spring training camp in the retirement village of Sunland, Florida, she expects to have a mostly uneventful time. Sure, it will be warm and sunny but the veteran reporter would rather be back in winter-bound Toronto spending time with her lover, homicide detective Andrew Munro.
Training camp, however, gets decidedly more interesting ? and dangerous ? when an attractive young sports writer better known for her sexual skills than her reportorial talent is found dead by the beach. Domingo Avila, a promising young rookie from the Dominican Republic, is quickly arrested and charged with the woman?s death.
Kate Henry, however, is convinced that Avila?s arrest is a mistake and she undertakes the daunting task of trying to clear his name.
About the Author
Alison Gordon, a journalist and broadcaster for twenty years, was the first woman on the American League beat when she covered the Toronto Blue Jays for the Toronto Star. Author of Foul Balls: Five Years in the American League, Gordon published her first Kate Henry mystery, The Dead Pull Hitter, in 1988, followed by Safe at Home, Night Game, Striking Out, and, in 1997, Prairie Hardball. She has been president of PEN Canada and of the Crime Writers of Canada, and the North American vice-president of the International Association of Crime Writers.
Alison Gordon lives in Toronto. She is at work on her next novel.
