A disease more threatening to postmenopausal women than the dreaded breast cancer receives some welcome gender-specific attention from medical journalist Tonnessen and Notelovitz, the physician who founded the Women's Medical and Diagnostic Center in Gainesville, Florida. After explaining how the circulatory system functions, they explore heart disease symptoms, current treatments, and preventive measures. The chapter on nutrition is thorough and firm without being strident and includes discussion of the controversy surrounding antioxidants. High on the list of suggested preventive treatments is taking estrogen, although even the discussion of this maintains a fairly moderate tone. The final chapter expands the consideration of cardiovascular illness to include hypertension and stroke. A thorough, nonpatronizing book that will help women cut through myths, determine their risks, and begin informed self-care. Stephanie Zvirin
