Christina Rossetti is recognized as the leading woman poet of the nineteenth century in England. Despite recent attention to her life in the form of three new biographies and to her poetry, Rossetti's prose works remain largely inaccessible to students and scholars. For the first time, an edited volume of selected prose by this important Victorian woman artist is made available to her readers. Selected Prose of Christina Rossetti presents the prose works in three modes: expository prose, including her two essays on Dante and two of her contributions to the Imperial Dictionary of Universal Biography, on 'Leopardi' and on 'Petrarch'; fiction, including the novella Maude, several of her short stories, and Speaking Likenesses; and judicious excerpts from her devotional prose, which consists of six volumes published over a period of eighteen years. This collection will be of interest to specialists in Victorian literature and women's studies, as well as to the general reader.

P. G. Stanwood is Professor of English at the University of British Columbia. He edited John Cosin’s A Collection of Private Devotions and Henry More’s Democritus Platonissans.
Known as a poet, Rossetti (1830-94) also wrote prose, primarily short fiction and devotional works. Here the editors, Dent (Centennial Coll., Toronto) and Stanwood (Univ. of British Columbia), collect a selection of her fiction, nonfiction, and devotional writing for the first time. In her children's story, Speaking Likeness (1874), Rossetti copied Lewis Carroll's Alice style, satirizing Victorian attitudes while hoping for commercial success. However, her fiction, on the whole, received mixed reviews. This undoubtedly moved Rossetti's writing toward devotional prose, and the six volumes that resulted are invaluable for an increased understanding of her religious poetry. Although Rossetti's religiosity was traditionally conservative, her writing reveals a feminism?although a shaky one?that challenged the Victorian patriarchal system. This anthology offers Rossetti's devotees an opportunity to know more about what informed her writing and, more particularly, her poetry. Recommended for public and academic libraries.?Robert L.
