A vacation in Las Vegas sounds great to stressed-out literary agent Charlie Greene, but when she witnesses a murder on the strip and falls in with a oddball group obsessed with Area 51, she gets a lot more than she had bargained for.

Maybe not, but they seem to give up the ghost at every other venue in Las Vegas, at least when Charlie Greene is around. Her vacation begins when she sees pilot Patrick Thompson getting hustled out of Loopy Louie's low-rent casino by two burly bouncers who toss him in front of a passing car. Pat's sister Caryl is stricken, but unwilling to go to the police, and nobody else cares except for Charlie and Timothy Graden, a cop on the scene, who promptly becomes the posthumous star of his own scene a few scenes later. Then it's off to the races for Beverly Hills's most scatty literary agent; her sometime lover, heartthrob Mitch Hilsten; her client Evan Black, the Poverty Row producer/director/screenwriter, whos planning a conspiracy-theory movie that will take his crew inside Area 51, the hush-hush government installation Pat Thompson had recently overflown; and Charlie's new friend Bradone McKinley, the astrologer who's so good at reading a hot deck that she has to work at losing enough to stay in the game. Not even a boy genius like Evan could pitch the knockabout plot, which links eight mysterious deaths to a casino robbery, rumors of aliens, and the usual jackbooted federal employees. But since Charlie still has a full complement of ungrateful clients, a teenaged daughter, a mother with hot flashes, and an ulcer of her own (wonder why?), fans of her four earlier adventures (It's Murder Going Home, 1996, etc.) may not even notice the tale's meanderings. One thing's for sure: Las Vegas is the perfect setting for the endless buzz that fills Charlie's head at the best of times. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
Thirty-something Charlie Greene is a savvy Hollywood literary agent and a single mother who happens to be a bit psychic. She's also stunning enough to date actor/hunk Mitch Hilsten. But Charlie's real attraction is for trouble. In her fifth adventure (after It's Murder Going Home), Charlie hits the Vegas casinos for a working vacation with her boss, Richard Morse. During her first night on the Strip, she sees two security guards shove a man in front of an oncoming car, yet the police seem strangely uninterested in her testimony. Then the one officer who had listened to her turns up dead, and Charlie worries that she may be next. Meanwhile, her star client, screenwriter/director Evan Black, embroils her in an illegal visit to a high-security military installation (Area 51) and in a high-tech casino theft. Astrologer Bradone Mckinley, who once shared a lucky streak with Charlie, attempts to help, to disastrous effect. All of which leaves Charlie to dodge casino musclemen and government agents as bodies pile up around her. With so many plot lines, it's not surprising that the novel takes a while to get moving. Eccentric characters and wacky situations, however, as well as sharp descriptions of the tawdry luxury of Vegas, will keep readers entertained until the suspense kicks in.
