9780312401061: NextText: Making Connections Across and Beyond the Disciplines

NextText addresses the problems students have transitioning into the critical thinking, reading, and writing required for academic work. Anne Kress and Suellyn Winkle, both at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida, carefully researched the skills required in disciplines across the university and developed NextText to teach students those skills. Every chapter in NextText offers students a rich range of readings from the informal magazine article to the researched academic essay. Students are encouraged to make connections between and among the multiple voices, genres, and disciplines represented in every chapter. NextText: Making Connections Across and Beyond the Disciplines prepares students for academic success in the composition course, and beyond.

About the Author:

ANNE KRESS received her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Florida. She is interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and previously held positions as Associate Professor and Chair of the English Department, all at Santa Fe Community College. When not laughing with her husband, son and daughter, she can be found quilting or blogging.

SUELLYN WINKLE received her Ph. D. in Film Theory from the University of Florida. She is Professor of English at Santa Fe Community College. She teaches almost entirely online. She lives in the country near Gainesville with her husband Doug, her cat Dooley, and her wireless connection.

Review:

"I've always tended to gravitate toward readers that have a writing across the curriculum emphasis because I want to give students an entry-way into thinking about the writing they'll do in other classes. At the same time, more and more emphasis these days is on public writing, or writing beyond the curriculum, so I think it's quite wonderful to see this text doing both -- writing across and beyond the curriculum."
-- Donna Strickland, University of Missouri -- Columbia
