YA?Despite strong cultural differences, Englishwoman Margaret Addison truly loves her Oneida warrior husband, Two Eagles. Their life together began in Riefe's The Woman Who Fell from the Sky (Forge, 1994), and Margaret has now adopted Oneida customs and given birth to a son. Not everyone in the tribe accepts her, however, and her family in England hires a kidnapper to impersonate a missionary and bring her home, forcibly if necessary. The complex plot includes rivalries within the tribe and warfare with the Mohawks. Torture is graphically described, and blunt language is included. Margaret's character is especially well drawn: she comes to life and meets many challenges. The opening list of the cast of characters will be referred to frequently as the Indian names can be difficult to remember. Numerous details are presented showing the Indian way of life in the 1700s. Although chapters are short, this novel requires readers to follow the intricacies of the plot. In this sequel to The Woman Who Fell from the Sky , Riefe continues her story of Margaret Addison's adjustment to life as an Oneida bride. Her marriage to Two Eagles, a chief of the Oneida tribe, is one of mutual love and trust. Little is said about Margaret's original destination (to come to Boston to fulfill a prearranged marriage agreement), but in the sequel her father hires an Englishman, Seth Wilson, to find her and bring her back to England. The story of Margaret's village life, including childbirth and struggles with a tribal enemy, is balanced by the dangerous journey of Seth Wilson as he tries to track down Margaret and convince her, through lies about her husband, to return with him to her English family. Tension coupled with graphic historical detail makes this a novel difficult to put down. Denise Perry Donavin
