Synopsis
Somewhere in contemporary Illinois...
David Bathory returns to his ancestral estate after the death of his father, the head of his family. David is the direct male heir to a birthright he has tried to deny: the lineage of Dracula--which means control over the entire family of vampires. Since his sinsiter uncle wishes to gain the vampire throne (and rule David as well), David is forced with two choices: either claim his birthright at the cost of his immortal soul, or suffer the immediate torments of hell. It's hell one way or the other.

Baker (Webs) attempts a fresh spin on the vampire tale in this involved novel, but his effort bogs down in an overstuffed plot and clumsy dialogue. David Bathory, 29, leads an uneventful life as a dealer of snakes and drugs. But after his wife is killed, he begins to rediscover his roots, which he learns are steeped in vampire ancestry. After meeting a mysterious woman named Dara, David quickly becomes engaged in a power struggle between his vampiric ancestors and his present-day family, realizing that he himself is a "dhampire"?a human able to control undead ancestors. The author introduces too much arcane material throughout the narrative, and his convoluted story line, involving Indian snake legends, incest, Satanism, medieval torture devices and various demons, proves difficult to follow. Only vampire aficionados will want to venture into this novel, which, like its pale heroes, is a grim reworking of a dead ancestor: Baker's out-of-print 1982 novel, Dhampire.

Paper. Condition: Near Fine. First Thus. David Bathory is the direct male heir in the Dracula lineage, but he is being challenged by his uncle. The UNillus. book of 320 pages begins with David and Alexandra tring to bring a LARGE group of POISONOUS snakes (incl. three Columbian coral snakes) in through customs. It ends with David as a hermaphrodite. Cond: Burgundy paper wrapper with a VERY sombre graphic of bats circlingthe globe. Fore points are V. sli. soft. Edges are CRISP !! Spine is fine. Pages 303 to 312 have a damp wrinkle to part of the upper edge - NOT offensive. Tight and CLEAN !! Giftable !! NO names, marks, tears, creases, nor folds. Neither scratches nor bumps. Quote (p. 195 ) : " Or rather, we were there with him, for I shared the body I inhabited with Dara.
