The victim of an intended mugging at the airport, Jack Mann kills his attacker and then takes the one million dollars he was carrying, setting himself up as a target for the cops, the mob, and the IRA

Frequently humorous and always engaging, this suspense novel takes off at an airport, where Jack Mann finds the barrel of a gun in his ear. After he manages to kill his assailant, Mann, a retired cop, drives off wondering what to do with the contents of the dead man's gym bagmillions in cash. What Mann gradually figures out is that the money belongs to the Mafia, and was stolen by the IRA. In New York on a terrorist mission, the young leader of the Irish plot is pursued by police and thugs. But so is Jack, who is eventually suspected of having the money. Through a pleasant romance with an Irish barmaid in Queens, Jack is drawn inexorably into the center of the action, and he, too, ends up chasing the terrorist. Excellent pacing adds to a slam-bang ending, and all the characters are credible and interesting.

His clothes are dirty, his pockets empty, his body tired. He walks toward his Buick, a beaten man. Then as he reaches for his keys, a gun is pressed against his ear. It seems the perfecxt end to a miserable day. It isn't. The attacker winds up dead on the airport pavement, and ex-cop Mann is left holding the bag - a bag with a million dollars cash inside. Mann does the only sensible thing. He stashes the stiff and keeps the stash. That move opens the door to a whole slew of deadly problems. The cops are suddenly fast on his tail, and the Mob wouldn't mind seeing him face down in the river. The Irish Republican Army - which the money had been headed for - plans to gun down Britain's Prime Minister. The body count starts to grow, the bullets fly East Side and West, and tempers are as short as 10-second fuses. Mann ducks and dodges this hot action better than anyone this side of Sugar Ray Leonard, and a good time is had by all, especially readers of this novel." Goodreads **2.67. Seller Inventory # 11950
