The warriors did not ride through the camp but swerved suddenly to the right and rode the entire circle around the camp, one hundred and thirty-five strong, Crow warriors there not for their eyes alone but for their strong arms and their battle wisdom. For a minute the officers could not react to the performance of their allies, so awestruck were they, but at last an order was shouted, and passed along, and then the walk soldiers began to fire volley after precision volley into the air, a respectful salute to the power of the long-beaked bird. It was a moment of communication between two peoples who shared the culture of the war-soldier, and respected each other for what they shared. Each fed off the power of the other, and felt the war-spirit rise from deep in their breasts.
