Review:
"This encyclopedic survey of 197 Muslim ethnic groups throughout the world is an expansion and revision of the 1978 edition. Although the introduction to the new edition is unchanged basically from the previous work, it still gives an impressive overview of the languages, socioeconomic patterns, religious practices, and cultural values of different Muslim groups. Each entry provides standard ethnographic data--the influence of Islamic law, social customs, economic patterns--a history of the area, and a bibliography. The inclusion not only of twice as many groups but also of more information on each group makes the new edition an important addition for most college and large public libraries."-Library Journal
"This greatly enlarged revision now contains entries for nearly 200 ethnic or linguistic groups that are partially or wholly Muslim, and that total 840,000,000 people worldwide. Each entry gives information on history, language, social structure, cultural customs, religious practices, and daily life as well as a bibliography.... Most of the entries from the first edition have been updated.... The maps have been totally redrawn to reflect the increased number of entries. The first two appendixes, summarizing statistical data by country and by group or subgroup, provide extensive cross-references and can be used as indexes. ... This is still the most comprehensive resource of its kind...."-Choice
