Synopsis

This reference volume provides information on the acculturation process of a representative number of ethnic groups in the United States. Each chapter focuses on a specific ethnic group and is written by an authority on the acculturation of that group. The volume includes such groups as the African-Americans, American Indians, Chinese-Americans, Mexican-Americans, and several European-American ethnic groups. Collectively, the chapters provide an excellent source for discerning both the unique experiences of the different groups and the similarities in their acculturation experiences.

Reviews

Many scholars in the field have combined forces to compile a history of the ethnic groups in the United States. Covered is the scope of the American melting pot from traditional immigrant groups like the Irish and Germans to newer groups such as Mexicans. Of special interest is the inclusion of Native Americans, who are often overlooked in similar titles. While the coverage of the various groups is uneven in depth and quality, chapters provide a basic introduction to the culture of each group. A main theme in each section is institutions that have held ethnic groups together over the years and how these institutions have influenced the groups' assimilation into society at large. To support this information, a detailed bibliography is included at the end of each chapter making this a valuable tool for the specialized library or for those interested in deeper study.
