COWDEN is founding Chair of the Music Program for the California State Summer School for the Arts and Professor of Music at San Jose State University./e During the past decade he has served as Editor-in-Chief of Opera Companies of the World: Selected Profiles (Greenwood Press, 1992), and has authored Instrumental Virtuosi: A Bibliography of Biographical Materials (Greenwood Press, 1989), Concert and Opera Conductors: A Bibliography of Biographical Materials (Greenwood Press, 1987), and Concert and Opera Singers: A Bibliography of Biographical Materials (Greenwood Press, 1985). He is a major contributor to the International Dictionary of Opera (1993) as well as to the American National Biography (1993+). He is presently working on Popular Singers of the Twentieth Century and Triumph of the American Singer: A Century of Bravos.
