Reviews

Guns are a hot topic today and one for which statistics get used and abused freely by debaters on both sides of the gun-control issue. This excellent set should find a home in every school and public library. It is unbiased, with a wealth of statistics on almost every page.

Each volume looks at a particular aspect of guns. The first volume, on the Second Amendment, covers the background of the amendment from British law through the Revolution and the writing of the amendment. It also examines militia in America; the National Rifle Association; gun-control legislation; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; and specific court cases. Volume 2 examines the firearms industry. Volume 3 is titled Children and Guns. Some of the issues tackled here are hunting, accidents, safety, gangs, and school violence. The last volume discusses public opinion, with a particular focus on political and legislative activity.

Many excellent photographs support the text. Although there are some charts and graphs, most of the statistical information is contained in the text itself. Boxes labeled "Fast Fact" are liberally placed throughout the volumes. Each volume has a bibliography, a glossary, a list of Internet sites, and an index to the set.

Many young adults are fascinated by guns and have strong convictions about the gun issue. This set will help them find information to use for classroom debates and persuasive essays. The text is concise and readable, and the authors have been fair in their treatment of all the arguments for and against guns. Because there are no footnotes, it may be difficult to find the exact sources for the numbers used in the text. A separate section with charts and graphs would be important to include in future editions, especially since interpretation of charts and graphs is a skill in most state standards. Libraries will want a circulating copy of this set as well as a reference copy. Robin Hoelle
