This book stresses a systematic, problem-solving approach to legal research. It sets out a clear, step-by-step research strategy that guides students through the research process. The book also includes a section on tips for avoiding common research pitfalls, a troubleshooting guide for helping students overcome the occasional problems that may crop up in their legal research projects, and a summary of the various primary and secondary sources of law and their use. This book serves as a reference guide for law students and young lawyers, as well as an innovative classroom text on legal research.

Mark K. Osbeck is a professor in the Legal Practice Program at the University of Michigan Law School, where he teaches legal research and other lawyering skills. He also serves as a law-firm consultant on complex commercial litigation matters. Prior to joining the faculty at Michigan, Professor Osbeck practiced law for 15 years, first in Washington, D.C., and then in Denver, Colorado, where he was a partner with a large law firm.
In our computer search-happy world, someone has finally said it and said it well. Step away from the computer and THINK. Legal research is not just a task. It is a process. To be done correctly, it requires thought, planning, and yes, a strategy. Bravo, Mark Osbeck. --Cole A. Wist, Partner, Ogletree Deakins
Professor Osbeck has come up with a nifty little book to help students and lawyers think clearly about what they are trying to discover with the various research tools. His big picture approach to research will help lawyers research more efficiently, saving themselves time and their clients money. --Kenneth D. Chestek, President, The Legal Writing Institute, Clinical Professor of Law, Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis
