Whether you are a law clinic student making your first foray into criminal defense, a newly admitted attorney, a general practitioner, or an attorney whose practice is concentrated in criminal defense, Representing the Accused will provide you with invaluable advice as you navigate your way through a criminal case. Authored by an experienced criminal defense attorney in a large public defender's office who has personally handled thousands of criminal cases, supervised representation in thousands more, and trained scores of attorneys, this book provides insight and guidance on how to efficiently and effectively manage each step in the handling of a criminal case. In order to help you provide quality representation to your clients, this publication offers clear explanations of a criminal attorney's role at every stage, from the arrest through the conclusion of the case.

Detailed suggestions on topics such as holding the first interview with a client, maintaining files, conducting investigations, and preparing for hearings, trials, negotiations, and pleas, combined with a thorough explanation of each aspect of managing a case, will make Representing the Accused your go-to reference as you develop your criminal practice.

Review:

"Jill Paperno's new book, Representing the Accused: A Practical Guide to Criminal Defense, is exactly that: a practical guide. Part teaching tool, part memoir, this handbook offers a step-by-step review of each phase of representation in a criminal case, conveyed in the voice of a successful and zealous practitioner who evolved in the trenches." New York Defenders Association Backup Center Report, August-October 2012, page 10 at nysda.org/docs/PDFs/TheReport/2012-Aug-Oct-Backup-Center-REPORT-XVII_3.pdf

"This book is everything I had imagined -- and more. It provides young lawyers with advice on just about every aspect of every stage of representing a criminal defendant. From file organization and effective client communication to subpoenaing information and trying a case, this book covers all the bases."  Nicole Black, The Daily Record, page 3,  5/13/13, Read more: nydailyrecord.com/blog/2013/05/13/book-review-papernos-representing-the-accused-a-step-by-step-guide-for-public-defenders/#ixzz2TeMHmtKx
