In the twenty years we have been teaching small group communications and discussion classes, we have endeavored to evolve a course that teaches practical communication skills that can be used in everyday work groups. Our experience has led us to conclude that a "learning-by-doing" or practical approach is the best way for you to learn basic small group discussion skills. Case studies afford you the opportunity to critique work groups on the basis of the discussion principles introduced in the chapters. In additions, throughout each chapter we have provided numerous examples of groups we have observed firsthand, so that you can compare your experience in small group communication with ours. In this third edition we have made a concerted effort to include the latest research findings on small group communications. Although the new findings are sprinkled throughout the book, they serv primarily as the foundation for updating Chapters 2 and 3.
