Synopsis
Stan Smith has the world's dullest name, and the world's dullest life to go with it. At 17, the former junior chess champion turned "Town's Laziest Register Monkey at the Town's Only Video Store" has no car, no college, and, of course, no girl. If that weren't pathetic enough, he's got an organic-food-freak vegan mother, an eccentric inventor father, a dead-end job, a dog with a flatulence problem, and a former classmate threatening to kill him. With a 165 IQ, Stan was expected to Be Something and Go Somewhere. But when all he has is a beat-up old bike that keeps getting vandalized, he's going nowhere, faster.

About the Author
Sean Beaudoin is the author of Going Nowhere Faster, which was nominated as one of YALSA's "Best Books for Young Adults"; Fade to Blue, which was called "Infinite Jest for teens" by Booklist, You Killed Wesley Payne, which was a Booklist Editor's Choice; and The Infects, which was called a "wickedly unpredictable adventure" by Publishers Weekly. Grade 8 Up—Seventeen-year-old Stan Smith, a chess champion and former child prodigy, shirks most of his scholarly and social responsibilities, instead choosing to spend his time working as an underpaid clerk in a video store. His hippie vegan parents, though well meaning, only embarrass him and make his self-defeating attempts to wrest control of his life all the more pathetic. Paths to recovery do surface only to be thwarted by one of the novel's offbeat characters or through Stan's own mistakes, which result in a seemingly directionless plot that eventually fizzles away. The narrative style follows suit, and the various lists and imaginary film treatments composed by Stan do little to infuse any personality into the story, let alone aid in moving it along. Moreover, these conceits feel stale and overused, especially when compared to the ingenious and hilarious characterizations contained in John Green's similarly themed An Abundance of Katherines (Dutton, 2006). What results is a half-baked and formulaic exploration of loserdom that lacks any of the dumpy, ironic, underdog charm that could raise it to Napoleon Dynamite heights.—Hillias J. Having graduated high school, Stan decides to forgo college to live in his parent's garage and write a movie. Despite his 165 IQ, all his movie ideas are horrible, not that he even comes close to finishing one. His only transport is his beat-up 10-speed bike that keeps getting vandalized. With no future and no car, a girl is obviously out of the question and if that weren't pathetic enough, he has to deal with a nutty family featuring his health-store-owning, organic-food-loving, vegan-freak mother and his inventor father who is obsessed with his eccentric creations. Even his dog has a farting problem. And to top it al, there's a bonehead jock threatening to kill him, for no apparent reason. Everyone thought Stan was going to Be Something and Go Somewhere but when this boy genius can't even get out of Happy Video, it looks like he's going nowhere, faster. When a crisis strikes, Stan must decide what kind of man he wants to be, and soon finds himself going somewhere after all.
