Grade 1-3-- Brian, a third grader, desperately wants to play on his classmates' soccer team. He convinces the team's captain to let him play a game with the Bayside Bombers through a form of juvenile blackmail, but literally and figuratively falls flat on his face and is quickly dismissed from the team. In a fit of anger, he challenges the Bombers to a game against a team that he will put together. With the help of his cousin Angel, Brian rounds up a group of soccer illiterate second graders to challenge the dreaded Bombers. After less than a week of practice, his team is able to upset the Bombers by relying on a skilled goaltender and distracting tricks such as yelling at an opposing player,"your fly is open." This improbable victory somewhat dampens an otherwise well-written and funny book. Still, the story will appeal to boys and girls, both of whom are fairly evenly represented among the soccer players, and to athletes and nonathletes, as the humor and clever characterizations outweigh the letdown of the pat ending. Included are ten full-page drawings. All in all, this book has a place in the "in-between" section of most libraries. --Tom S. Hurlburt, formerly at Minneapolis Public Library
