Dr. Batshaw joined the Children's National Medical Center in July, 1998, as the "Fight for Children" Chair of Academic Medicine and Chief Academic Officer; Director, Children's Research Institute; and Professor and Chairman of Pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. Previously he was the W.T. Grant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Physician-in-Chief of children's Seashore House, and Chief of the Division of Child Development and Rehabilitation Medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Batshaw's experience includes 25 years of treating children with developmental disabilities. He is listed in Best Doctors in America. Dr. Batshaw is recognized as an international authority on inborn errors of metabolism and has received numerous major grants from the National Institutes of Health. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Inherited Metabloic Disorders, and the Society for Developmental Pediatrics. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from the University of Chicago. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at the Hospital from Sick Children in Toronto and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Dividing his handbook into five parts, Batshaw, a pediatrician who works with children with developmental disabilities, discusses the diagnosis of a handicap, genetic and other causes of developmental disabilities, practical information on individual diseases and syndromes, approaches to therapy, and social, legal, and educational decisions with a disabled child. Additional readings amplify and enhance the content of each chapter. Batshaw presents a significant amount of material in a clear and concise manner, and his responsible, capable, and supportive approach will help parents meet the challenge of caring for a child with greater needs. Highly recommended.
