Grade 3-6-- By describing the routines and interactions of various American desert animals from sundown to sundown, Dewey relates facts of natural history to form an enjoyable ecological essay. In clear, simple prose, scenes are detailed and action-set. About a million free-tailed bats take an hour to pour from lava-rock caves and travel 100 miles to eat a ton of insects before their dawn return, while a pair of coyotes hunt 15 miles before returning to separate dens. Large, textured colored-pencil sketches on slightly outsized, oblong pages convey both panorama and close-ups in a lively, if unexceptional, fashion. While there are many good books available on deserts, this attractive picture book introduction to a unique habitat and its wildlife will supplement science curricula and entice young naturalists. --Ruth M.
