Grade 5-7-An information-packed miscellany of facts, photographs, illustrations, stories, and appealing ideas for activities. Narratives treat a variety of people representative of antebellum, war, and postwar times. In addition to Harriet Tubman and Abraham Lincoln, readers learn about the Southern-born Grimke sisters, leaders in the antislavery movement; and James Thomas, a former slave who became one of the richest African-American men in the country. Discussions of plantation slave life, European immigration, and children who took part in battles are also included. Cooking from period recipes, playing games typical of the era, making a Union Army "dog tent," and deciphering and creating spy codes are among the suggested activities. A play about the Battle of Bull Run is included, with parts for a large cast and instructions for making easy, inexpensive costumes and props. Black-and-white photographs, reproductions, and maps appear throughout. An engaging resource for teaching and learning.
