Review:

This massive thriller pits a scheming prince of the Church who believes he was once Alexander the Great against the Addison brothers--Harry, a Hollywood lawyer, and Danny, a Vatican priest. It seems that Danny had the bad luck to hear another cardinal's confession outlining a heinous plot to poison China's water supply in order to win the Vatican bankers a multi-billion-dollar contract to rebuild it--and of course to take advantage of the opportunity to convert a quarter of the world's population and ensure the Church's world domination into the next century. Spanning the globe from Vatican City to Beijing, from Los Angeles to Switzerland, the action never stops. And whenever it seems to falter for more than a paragraph, someone among Folsom's picaresque cast of minor characters (a nun, a dwarf, a CIA station chief, a beautiful television journalist, and an African poet, among others) turns up just in time to give it a nudge. The narrative is not as fluid as it could be, and the plot might have been devised by a conspiracy theorist with a taste for chaos physics, but fans of Folsom's intense novel The Day After Tomorrow won't be disappointed. --Jane Adams

From the Back Cover:

In Italy, the Cardinal Vicar of Rome is assassinated during a papal celebration. In Los Angeles, entertainment lawyer Harry Addison receives a desperate message from his long-estranged brother, Father Daniel Addison, a Vatican priest. Hours later a tour bus with Father Daniel aboard explodes on the road to Assisi.

When Harry arrives in Italy to claim his brother's body, he discovers that not only may Father Daniel still be alive, but he is the prime suspect in the murder of the Cardinal Vicar. In a sudden turn, Harry finds himself framed for the murder of an Italian policeman. Now on the run and on his brother's trail, Harry is thrust into a terrifying world of horror and deception where an international terrorist hunts Father Daniel as relentlessly as the authorities...and where a monstrous conspiracy arises from the very heart of the Vatican.

Book Description Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Ships From Canada. New 566 pages. From Booklist Folsom kicks off this superviolent tale of Vatican intrigue with the assassination of a cardinal, followed immediately by a bus bombing that apparently kills the apparent assassin, Father Daniel Addison. It is an explosive start to a mystery with blockbuster written all over it. The mayhem temporarily subsides as the Italian police try to get a handle on what happened. They initially grill American Harry Addison, who has come to Rome to collect his brother's body for burial in America. Then one of the policemen is murdered while in Harry's company, and Harry becomes a fugitive from the crime scene. On the run, he ponders his discovery that the mangled body he viewed in the casket was not his brother's; shifting points of view reveal that other interested parties are disturbed by this proof that Father Addison survived the bombing. Finding the padre thus drives the whole novel. Those who want to finish what they started have at their comma. Bookseller Inventory # 8715062477
