Synopsis
Written by a team of experts to be a practical guide for all who take care of critically ill patients, Handbook of Hemodynamic Monitoring is divided into two parts. Part I, Basic Conserations, deals with the techniques of hemodynamic monitoring. This section discusses the monitoring equipment itelf, outlines techniques for catheter insertion and interpretation, gives guidelines on the maintenance of lines, shows how to calculate hemodynamic paramters, and concludes with a chapter on complications. The nine chapters in this seciton are liberally illustrated with drawings of anatomy, technique, and equipment. Tables summarizing measurement data are also included. Part II of the Handbook includes twelve chapters on those specific cardiac and respitory prblems in which hemodynamic monitoring is useful. For each disease or syndrome, the authors summarize the clinical findings and then discuss in very specific terms how the pulmonary artery catheter can help in diagnosis and treatment. Throughout, with the help of summary tables and flowcharts, they emphasize the practical points of hemodynamic monitoring-how to use the data collected.
