PreSchool-K-- Each of these slight, small-format books features big sister Sarah, baby brother John, and their energetic dog Theo. In Here Comes John-- the least effective of the four--John discovers and tries to devour a snail on the garden path. Sarah, supervising Bath Time for John, leaves John in the tub to rescue a toy frog stolen by Theo. John crawls out of the tub and follows them out of the house on hands and knees. Here Comes Theo to greet Sarah with "the licking treatment," which John (taking his first step) also receives. Where Is Sarah? John and Theo wonder, as Sarah calls to them from the tall grass where she is hiding. John doesn't really care, Sarah gets bored, and Theo finds her. The illustrations--cartoon squares highlighted with color on each page--are expressive, although not outstanding. An open box of snail killer on the garden path in Here Comes John , not necessary to the story, is unwise in a book for children. Toddler John being left in a tub of shoulder-high water in Bathtime . . . is equally disturbing.
