Grade 3-5-- Inspired by a school visit from a popular writer, the indelible Mariah Delany launches another ambitious enterprise. Despite the misgivings of her parents, cynical utterances from her teachers, and a total lack of support from her friends--all of whom still have a sharp recollection of her last escapade--the young entrepreneur is determined to make her Author-of-the-Month Club a raving success. After a disastrous meeting with a "mystery author" (a disguised classmate reading her own rambling stories), an encounter with a famous writer who does not seem to like children, and a visit from another who expects lodgings for a month, Mariah reluctantly gives up her project and resignedly faces piles of accumulated homework. With her usual spirit and enthusiasm, the heroine survives numerous mishaps and plot twists and still manages to remind those around her that "Books make things happen."
