Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Hector is a little snowman enchanted by his mother's story of a golden snowflake. Every hundred years, one snowflake shines like the sun and nothing can melt the lucky snowman who finds it. One night, Hector sees something glitter and fall from the sky, and the next morning he sets off to search for the golden prize. Aided by his forest friends, his search is unproductive until he starts walking home and the special flake drifts down on him. The text ends abruptly here, making the fulfillment of Hector's dream anticlimatic as well as improbable (would a snowflake seen the previous night still be falling?). Endearing cartoon characters will attract children to this book, but the thin plot and sudden ending will disappoint them.
