reschool-Kindergarten--Winsome grins of piglets remind readers of the joys (and challenges) of bathtime as Mama Pig attempts to get her little ones clean. "`And NOW-splishy splashy sploshy'-And she splooshed and she swooshed and galooshed them all over." McQuillan's cartoon illustrations capture a range of emotions: Mama's frustration, the piglets' initial stubborn refusal to cooperate, their outright exuberance in a bubble-filled tub, and a mischievous escape to "get GRUBBY again." Both cover and endpapers leave no question as to the topic of this book. The initial tub illustration leads to pages of pastel blocks with the youngsters and bath toys. While the story isn't new, the spacing of repetitive or sequential text perfectly suits the intended audience. Mama's piglets, like many toddlers, exude both innocence and boundless energy. They don't slow down even after the lights go out. Pair this title with Carol Roth's Ten Dirty Pigs/Ten Clean Pigs (North-South, 1999).

Mrs. Pig entices her three bath-phobic children into the tub with bubbles and toy ducks and "splooshes" (" `Please sploosh ME!' says Piglet Two"). In fact, she's so successful that she catches them "sneak, sneak, sneaking" out after bedtime with the aim of getting so dirty that they'll need two baths in one night. McQuillan (The Get Well Soon Book) works in large simple shapes and cheery colors; the strokes of her paintbrush create a subtle woven pattern for extra visual interest. She has a field day with her characters' rosy plumpness the sight of Mrs. Pig trudging off to the bathroom with her piglets tucked under her arms is certain to elicit giggles. Departing from the somber theme of A Ladder to the Stars, Puttock's prose favors brisk, rollicking rhythms, and when the three piglets speak, the squeals are nearly audible. Ages 3-7.

Ages 3-6. The struggles of bath time come humorously to life in this lighthearted British import. When Mama Pig collects her three grubby piglets for a good scrubbing, she's met with fierce protests: "They squirmed and they wormed and they would NOT be washed." But Mama Pig knows just what to add to make cleaning up fun. With bubbles, ducks, and a green scrubby brush, her little ones learn to love baths. In fact, Mama Pig catches the piglets sneaking out to get dirty again, just so they can have another bath. The text will attract children with its appealing repetition and "splashy, splashy, sploshy" sound effects, and the pastel-colored illustrations, with the pleasingly round characters, catch all the humor and rollicking antics.
