A child describes her experiences feeding a deer family in the winter

From Publishers Weekly:
On a snowy moonlit night, two fawns, a doe and a buck approach the house where a child waits for them. She and her father prepare a pail full of apples and corn to take out to the four hungry deer. Unafraid, the deer seem to know that the food is for them; after they eat, the fawns scamper around and play, much to the delight of the girl watching them. The next day, the deer disappear into the woods, but the girl knows they will return at night. Aragon and Baker have created a gentle tale of warmth and caring; text and pictures play off one another, balancing the first-person narration with interior scenes of the loving family sharing the winter bounty. In iridescent watercolors, the artist gives the scenes of snowfall a filmy, dreamlike quality, which furthers the mood of enchantment between human family and deer. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A warm cottage with a secure family gathered around a kerosene-lit supper table makes a cozy, safe base from which to venture out to the edge of a snowy wood, where a beautiful deer family of buck, doe, and twin fawns are shyly and patiently anticipating grain and apples. The soft and comforting tone of this nostalgic picture book is a product of the poetic words and the lovely watercolors that match the hazy light of a snowy evening and wintry morning. One minor quibble--the book is narrated in the first person by a child who, as pictured, is a little young for the carefully polished language of the text. This lovely book will please any nature lover, particularly one looking for a story filled with peace and love to share at bedtime. --Amy Spaulding, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn
