PreSchool-K-- Tired Harry has placed all of his toys around the bedroom and ordered them to go to sleep immediately. The mischievous lamb, however, disobeys and wakes the monkey, who wakes the bear, who wakes the mouse. They all become noisy and rambunctious, forcing Harry to get out of bed and discipline them by hiding them away in various dark places. This slight bedtime tale should appeal to children who don't always want to go to sleep when told to. The naughty animals have the same cheerful, sly smiles on their faces that tots have when they climb out of their cribs and beds after being tucked in at night, yet they return to sleep with good grace after Harry becomes firm with them. Although the perspective in the illustrations is flat and the figures simple, they are filled with a variety of patterns--zigzags, dots, splashes (even Harry's pajamas are figured with violent red and yellow triangles)--and bold geometrics in blobs of sharply contrasting bright colors. In this sequel to I Won't Go to Bed , Harry is still having problems getting to sleep. Last time he kept himself up; this time, his stuffed toys won't let him have a moment's peace. No sooner does the tired boy shut his eyes than the stuffed lamb wakes up the toy monkey, who in turn wakes up the bear, etc. An exasperated Harry hollers, "Tonight I'm really tired and I want to sleep," and patiently separates them around the room (as he had done initially), which successfully quiets them. This sparely worded story will strike a chord with all children who have suspected that toys come alive when their owners' backs are turned. And the playing out of this fantasy may ameliorate any lingering negative feelings about going to bed. The airbrush-enhanced illustrations have a contemporary look that complements the text. Ages 4-8.
