Now in the Eighth Edition, Concepts of Programming Languages introduces students to the main constructs of contemporary programming languages and provides the tools necessary to critically evaluate existing and future programming languages. By presenting design issues for various language constructs, examining the design choices for these constructs in some of the most common languages, and critically comparing the design alternatives, this book gives readers a solid foundation for understanding the fundamental concepts of programming languages. In addition, Sebesta strives to prepare the reader for the study of compiler design by providing an in-depth discussion of programming language structures, presenting a formal method of describing syntax, and introducing approaches to lexical and syntactic analysis.

This best-selling book, now in its fourth edition, provides a wide-ranging and in-depth discussion of programming language concepts. As in previous editions, author Bob Sebesta describes fundamental concepts of programming languages by presenting design issues of the various language constructs, examining the design choices for these constructs in a few common languages, and critically comparing the design alternatives. The book covers the most widely used methods of syntax description and introduces the most common approaches to describing the semantics of programming languages. Discussions of implementation methods and issues are integrated throughout the book.
New to the Fourth EditionRobert Sebesta is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Professor Sebesta received a BS in applied mathematics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and MS and PhD degrees in computer science from the Pennsylvania State University.
