Fractional Order Systems and Applications in Engineering presents the use of fractional calculus (calculus of non-integer order) in the description and modelling of systems and in a range of control design and practical applications. The book covers the fundamentals of fractional calculus together with some analytical and numerical techniques, and provides MATLAB® codes for the simulation of fractional-order control (FOC) systems. The use of fractional calculus can improve and generalize well-established control methods and strategies. Many different FOC schemes are presented for control and dynamic systems problems. These extend to the challenging control engineering design problems of robust and nonlinear control. Practical material relating to a wide variety of applications including, among others, mechatronics, civil engineering, irrigation and water management, and biological systems is also provided. All the control schemes and applications are presented with either system simulation results or real experimental results, or both. Dumitru Baleanu is a professor at the Institute of Space Sciences, Magurele-Bucharest, Romania and a visiting staff member at the Department of Mathematics, Çankaya, University, Ankara, Turkey. He received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Atomic Physics in 1996. His fields of interest include Fractional Dynamics and its applications, Fractional Differential Equations and their applications, Discrete Mathematics, Image Processing, Bioinformatics, Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Physics, Soliton Theory, Lie Symmetry, Dynamic Systems on time scales, Computational Complexity, the Wavelet Method and its applications, Quantization of systems with constraints, the Hamilton-Jacobi Formalism, as well as geometries admitting generic and non-generic symmetries.
Dr. Valentina Emilia Balas is Full Professor in the Department of Automatics and Applied Software, Faculty of Engineering, Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad, Romania. She holds a PhD in Applied Electronics and Telecommunications from the Polytechnic University of Timisoara. Her research interests include intelligent systems, fuzzy systems, soft computing, smart sensors, information fusion, modeling, and simulation.
Dr. Balas serves as Director of the Intelligent Systems Research Center and Director of International Relations, Programs and Projects at Aurel Vlaicu University of Arad. She is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advanced Intelligence Paradigms and International Journal of Computational Systems Engineering, and serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals. She has led and contributed to numerous national and international research initiatives, including the European Union-funded BioCell-NanoART project on bio-inspired cellular nano-architectures. She is active in several professional societies and technical committees, including IEEE, the European Society for Fuzzy Logic and Technology, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Dr. Praveen Agarwal earned his Ph. D. in Mathematics at the Malviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) in Jaipur, India, in 2006. Recently, Prof. Agarwal has been listed as the World's Top 2% Scientist from 2020-2025, released by Stanford University. In the 2025 ranking of best scientists worldwide announced by Research.com, he ranked 13th at the India level and 1297th worldwide in Mathematics. Dr. Agarwal has been actively involved in research as well as pedagogical activities for the last 24 years. His major research interests include Special Functions, Fractional Calculus, Numerical Analysis, Differential and Difference Equations, Inequalities, Probability & Statistics, and Fixed Point Theorems. He has published 11 research monographs and edited volumes and more than 405 publications (with almost 100 mathematicians all over the world) in prestigious national and international mathematics journals. Dr. Agarwal worked previously either as a regular faculty or as a visiting professor and scientist in universities in several countries, including India, Germany, Turkey, South Korea, UK, Russia, Malaysia and Thailand. He has served over 50 Journals in the capacity of an Editor/Honorary Editor, or Associate Editor, and published 15 books as an editor.
