9780323999052: Current Developments in Biotechnology and Bioengineering: Deep Eutectic Solvents: Fundamentals and Emerging Applications

Synopsis

Deep eutectic solvents represent the newest addition among all other non-conventional and alternate solvent systems. Deep Eutectic Solvent Fund Emerging Applications provides detailed insights on these neoteric solvents, their synthesis methods, types, physicochemical properties, and sustainable applications in emerging scientific areas. The book follows a mechanistic approach on understanding the role of DESs as sustainable media for CO2 capture, biomass pretreatment, as catalysts, as reaction media for material synthesis, cross coupling reactions, templates for drug delivery, etc. The book offers a springboard for encouraging vital discussions and inspiring further innovations in the field of environmentally benign eutectic solvent systems.

  • Provides a detailed account of development on DESs with special focus on hydrophilic /hydrophobic DESs
  • Describes experimental and theoretical outlook on the physical and chemical properties of DESs
  • Discusses the toxicity profiling of DESs and their importance in designing biocatalytic routes
  • Includes DESs in emerging areas - pharmaceuticals, drug discovery, functional materials and membrane science
  • Covers use of DESs in CO2 capture, biomass transformations, organic reactions, etc.

About the Authors

Dr. Ashish Pandey is an Associate Research Officer at the National Research Council Canada (NRC), Ottawa, Canada, and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering at Université Laval, Canada. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. His research focuses on sustainable hydrometallurgy, critical minerals processing, green solvent systems, and clean energy technologies, with particular emphasis on developing environmentally responsible approaches for metal extraction and recovery. He has extensive experience in both academic and industrial research, contributing to the development and scale-up of innovative technologies for the recovery of critical and energy-transition metals from primary and secondary resources. Prior to joining NRC, Dr. Pandey held research and development positions in industry, working on advanced metallurgical processes and sustainable resource recovery technologies. His work aims to bridge fundamental science and industrial application, supporting resource sustainability and circular economy initiatives.

Dr. Bhagyashree Tiwari received her Ph.D. in water sciences from Institut national de la recherche Scientifique (INRS), Université du Québec, Canada in 2020. Her research work focuses on the development as well as optimization of various water and wastewater treatment techniques, production of value-added products, such as, biopolymers from waste, identification, and characterization of microscopic organisms and on molecular biology approach for emerging contaminant removal. Previously, Dr. Tiwari was a MITACS-ELEVATE Postdoctoral Fellow at INRS, Université du Québec, Canada. She has published several peer-reviewed journal papers, over 15 book chapters, edited 1 book and has presented in many national and international conferences. She is also the recipient of several awards, prominent among them are the Philip Jones award from Canadian Association on Water Quality in 33rd Eastern Canadian Symposium on Water Quality Research, best oral research presentation award in 7th International forum on Industrial Bioprocess in Wuxi, China. She received the prestigious mobility grant from Venice International University, Italy.

Prof. Ashok Pandey is currently Executive Director, Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability-India, Lucknow. His major research and technological development interests are industrial and environmental biotechnology and energy biosciences, focusing on biomass to biofuels and chemicals, waste to wealth and energy, etc.

Professor Ir. Dr Suzana Yusup, is the Head of HICoE Center for Biofuel & Biochemical Research (CBBR) and is a full Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia.
