In the 1950s, lesser-known or unknown playwrights were given opportunity for growth by the New Dramatists, a group formed by Howard Lindsay and Michaeala O'Harra that allowed playwrights to discuss their work with the aim of getting it produced. Several successful playwrights were invited to address their struggling colleagues. As shown by these transcriptions, these talks varied greatly; some were informal give-and-takes, while others had the tone of a graduate school lecture. Among the playwrights whose comments appear here are Howard Lindsay, Arthur Miller, Moss Hart, and Josh Logan. Though the text is not verbatim the editors state that "repetitions [and] references to persons now obscure and events long irrelevant have been deleted" this is a unique source on the craft of that time in the words of the professionals.
