Pisarz wskazuje najwłaściwszą jego zdaniem drogę życiową: drogę stopniowej przemiany. Wybiera ślimaka na symbol niespiesznego, dalekiego gwałtownym zrywom, ale rozważnego i wytrwałego dążenia do celu. W głoszeniu ślimaczej filozofii wspomaga autora fikcyjna postać gdańskiego profesora gimnazjalnego Hermanna Otta, nazywanego Wątpiszem, który na Kaszubach przez pięć lat ukrywał się przed hitlerowcami. Teraźniejszość bowiem - jak to często bywa u Grassa - powiązana jest silnie z przeszłością, z latami hitleryzmu i z tragedią skazanej na zagładę żydowskiej społeczności Gdańska.

About the Author
Gunter Grass (1927-2015) was Germany's most celebrated post-war writer. He was a creative artist of remarkable versatility: novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, graphic artist. Grass's first novel, The Tin Drum, is widely regarded as one of the finest novels of the twentieth century, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999.
