I sell books for Ballantine. When I started this job five years ago, this book was already in bookstores. It is a book my customers sold to me, and it has ended up being one of my favorite books from any publisher.
If you haven't discovered Lee Smith yet, this is the book to start with. The story is told in the unique form of letters spanning the life of Ivy Rowe. Ivy was born around the turn of the century in a small cabin in the southern Appalachians. If you have spent any time in this part of the county, Ivy's letters will bring their beauty back into fresh focus. Her letters also reflect the poverty and difficulty of life in the back woods. Ivy rebels against this way of life and grows up with the hope of making something of herself. This book though, is far from a Cinderella story. Ivy is far too human.
Just as this book was recommended to me, I have in turn recommended it to others. It is a timeless gem that I know will be passed on to book lovers for years to come.

About the Author
Lee Smith is a senior editor at The Weekly Standard. He has written for Slate, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the New Republic, as well as for a variety of major Arab media outlets. He is also a senior fellow of the Hudson Institute and the author of The Strong Horse: Power, Politics, and the Clash of Arab Civilizations. A native of New York, he currently resides in Washington, DC.
