Hardb. Condition: Mint. Dust Jacket Condition: Mint. First Thus. INTO THE HEART OF BORNEO. Redmond O'Hanlon. Picador Travel Classics, London. 1994 First Thus ISBN 0330335839 266pp Hardback. Redmond O'Hanlon, and the poet, James Fenton, set out to rediscover the lost rhinoceros of Borneo. They were loaded with enough back-breaking kit to survive two months in a steaming 95° (in the shade) jungle of creeping, crawling, biting things. O'Hanlon could also rely on his encyclopaedic knowledge of the region's flora and fauna, and had read-up on how to avoid being eaten by anything (stick your thumbs in a crocodile's eyes, if you have time). And yet they proceeded to have an adventure that neither O'Hanlon, nor his friend, nor even his guides were remotely prepared for. Into the Heart of Borneo was published in 1985, and made O'Hanlon's name at once. It was, said travel writer Eric Newby, one of the three best books of its kind published since the war. O'Hanlon dragged himself, his canoe, and Fenton, into some very dangerous and unexplored places. They paddled and walked to the edge of the map, to the place where their SAS-supplied charts warned " No Cover. Area Unsurveyed, Relief Data Incomplete, Map Sources Unreliable" ! This book is just one of many volumes I am selling on this site from the Picador Travel Classics series of 17 hard-cover books published by Picador during the 1990s. Many had new introductions by writers who themselves were seasoned travelers. All of the titles are re-prints of what the publishers thought of as "classic" travel literature. Each book is bound in uniform blue cloth covered boards with bright silver gilt titling to the spine. There are blue silk head and tail bands an a blue silk marker sewn in. Each has an unclipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Jane Paulton. This copy is in mint unmarked condition and appears unread. The author has penned a new introduction to this edition.
