'I am about to pull the curtains and shut out the weather when, at the margin of my vision, a woman falls out of the sky' From the warmth of her living room, her infant twins tucked up in bed, Robin Ballantyne is horrified to witness the suicide of her neighbour, Paula Carmichael. An investigation soon reveals that this highly respected social activist and community figure had been haunted by dark, mysterious secrets. Inexplicably, her diaries are peppered with observations about Robin herself. When Robin puts this terrible event behind her and tries to restart her career as a TV producer, tragedy moves even closer to home and she finds herself at the centre of a murder investigation, her safe existence transformed into a living nightmare. Hounded by police and press, Robin must enter a dangerous race against the clock to save her name, and her life . . . 'A stellar debut novel . . . Remember Sampson's name; it's about to become an important one in crime fiction' Booklist

About the Author:
Catherine Sampson started her career in the BBC and has worked as Beijing correspondent for The Times. She now lives in Beijing with her husband and three children, and is currently working on her next Robin Ballantyne novel.
From AudioFile:
It's not easy to watch someone fall out of a window to her death, but life is much harder when the police begin to think that maybe this innocent bystander wasn't really just standing by. Robyn Ballantine is trying to make her way back to her career in television, balancing her job with the demands of being a single mother with twins, when she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Kate Reading's narration is strong and well paced. She personifies the strength of this character, who is slightly overwhelmed by the events that follow and police inquiries that seem to be focusing on her. The supporting characters are distinct and fully developed. Reading's performance of righteous indignation, emotional distress, and strong resolve rings clear and true. She draws out the ironies of the situation and the bits of humor sprinkled in. J.E.M. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
