Tim Winton is undisputedly one of the finest storytellers working in the English language. Now he gives us seventeen exquisite, overlapping stories of second thoughts and mid-life regret - extraordinary tales of ordinary people from ordinary places. Here are turnings of all kinds - changes of heart, nasty surprises, slow awakenings, sudden detours - where people struggle against the terrible weight of the past and challenge the lives they've made for themselves.Brilliantly crafted, and as tender as it is challenging, "The Turning" dissects and celebrates the moments when the light shines through.

Tim Winton was born in Perth in 1960. He is the author of fifteen books, including novels, a collection of stories, non-fiction and books for children. His first novel, An Open Swimmer, won the Australian /Vogel Award. Cloudstreet won the Banjo Award and the Miles Franklin Award in Australia and the Deo Gloria Prize in England, and has been successfully adapted for the theatre. He has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice, for The Riders (1995) and Dirt Music (2002).
This collection of interlocking stories chronicles all that life has to offer, both good and bad, in a Western Australian coastal town. They are spare, emotional vignettes that focus on choices and the consequences that come from them. Two narrators, Humphrey Bower and Caroline Lee (both Australian), guide us expertly through this maze of humanity. Their voices, alternating haphazardly throughout the stories, are strong, clear, and emotional without being overwrought or dramatic. Bower exudes both the vigor of the Aussie male and the fragility that undercuts it. Lee's characters project the toughness they need to survive but also the tenderness they wish Bower's males would exhibit. Their readings complement and expand the text, making this a unique listening experience. R.I.G. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
