About the Author

Alice Sebold is the bestselling author of The Lovely Bones a novel, and Lucky, a memoir. She lives in California with her husband, the novelist Glen David Gold.

From AudioFile

Listeners might be more easily absorbed into this brief lyrical novel were they not told in its opening sentences that the storyŐs narrator has just suffocated her rapidly deteriorating mother. From that point on, the story is told as a flashback involving an only child, a mentally ill mother, and a father who finally succeeds at suicide. Flashback requires reflection. Despite Joan AllenŐs more than adequate rendering, audio by nature pushes ahead, not leaving a lot of space between the words. Repetition and slight variation, two of SeboldŐs strong points on the page, become petty annoyances. New-age musical interludes between chapters are out of place with the tone of the novel. In this case, SeboldŐs excellent writing has to be read on the page to be fully appreciated. R.R. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A woman steps over the line into the unthinkable in this searing portrait of a to-the-death struggle between a mother and a daughter. Clair Knightly and her daughter Helen are locked in a relationship so unrelenting that it has sucked the air out of both of their lives. And as this electrifying novel opens, Helen crosses a boundary she never dreamt she would even approach. But while her act is almost unconscious, it also seems like the fulfillment of a lifetime's buried desire. Over the next twenty-four hours, Helen's life rushes in at her as she confronts the choices that have brought her to this crossroads. A woman who has spent a lifetime trying to win the love of a mother who had none to spare, she now faces an uncertain and dangerous freedom. In The Almost Moon, Sebold explores the complex ties within families, the meaning of devotion and the fragility of the boundary that separates us from our darkest impulses. This is an unforgettable novel, a raw and powerful story, written with the clarity and insight that only Alice Sebold can bring to the page. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Seller Inventory # GOR000372831
