This is Eileen O'Casey's companion to Sean. In that book she concentrated memorably upon her husband, her life with the great Irish dramatist. Sean O'Casey. Now, with equal freshness, she develops her personal story; the narrative of a beautiful girl, Dublin-born. English-bred, who went on the light musical stage, left Rose Marie for a visit to America, and while in New York read and was overwhelmed by O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock. Resolved to meet the author, she returned to London where she acted in two of his plays. Sean and the much younger Eileen were married in the autumn of 1927; the new book, as endearing and on occasion as directly moving as its partner, gives another view of a remarkable marriage. This time, though Sean is frequently in the foreground, the emphasis is upon Eileen: her upbringing as a sensitive and impressionable girl in orphanage and convent; the difficult relationship with her mother; her stage career before and after marriage (with the comradeship of Bitter Sweet); the settling into devotedly united family life in various places, and for many years in South Devon; and the new life she has made for herself since Sean's death at Torquay in 1964. Notable figures appear, among them Bernard Shaw. Augustus John. C. B. Cochran. Peggy Wood. Harold Macmillan.
