Old English is the language of the Anglo- Saxons who ruled England for six centuries. After the Conquest, the language of literature changed to Norman French, and Latin remained the language of the Church. When English reemerged as the language of literature in the fourteenth century it had greatly changed, and its ancestor, Old English, or Anglo-Saxon, was forgotten. Since its rediscovery a rich vernacular literature has been recovered; Beowulf and the heroic poetry; the poetic Elegies such as "The Wanderer" and 'The Seafarer; The Dream of the Road" and the Christian verse of Caedmon and Cynewulf; the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the prose of King Alfed and Abbot Aelfric. All of these are generously represented here "in translation" and discussed in relation to the culture from which they came.
